The Big Picture
- Season 20 of
Grey’s Anatomy
will feature the return of Arizona Robbins after a six-season absence. - Jessica Capshaw seamlessly steps back into Arizona’s shoes, working with Dr. Bailey.
- Expect more comebacks and surprises in the landmark season, with less episodes due to a previous strike.
Everyone loves a comeback, and the new season of Grey’s Anatomy will feature plenty of those. The new episodes from the long- (long, long) running drama from ABC are coming next week, and Season 20 will kick off with a fan-favorite character walking down the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital: Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) is back after being absent for six seasons. The season debuts next Thursday, March 14.
It’s pretty easy to see that Capshaw was able to step right back into Arizona’s shoe and bring back her energy to deal with a bunch of new interns. From the look of it, she’ll work with Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) on a project. The actor is returning as a guest star, and so far we don’t know for how many episodes she’ll be around. She isn’t the only one to return, though: The trailer also reveals a new look at Alex Landi, who’s playing Dr. Nico Kim again for the first time since his exit on Season 18.
Since this is a landmark season for Grey’s Anatomy, we can expect more surprises to roll out across the episodes — which will come on a smaller count due to last year’s historical strike. Even though we do not know what other characters might end up returning, the trailer makes it clear there will be plenty of nail-biting storylines for this season. One of them includes Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) making the hard decision to operate on Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), and Grey’s Anatomy fans are far too seasoned at this point and know how badly this may turn out.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Is Seeing a Lot of Comebacks
Another beloved individual who’s making a comeback of sorts is the title character herself: Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) never really left the series, but her presence — or lack thereof — has drastically changed over the last season of the show ever since Pompeo made the decision to scale back on her participation after an 18-season run. Last year, Pompeo promised fans on an Instagram post that she’d “definitely be back to visit” the hospital and Season 20 is here to show that the actor made good on her promise.
Last but not least, the trailer for Season 20 welcomes Natalie Morales (The Morning Show) into the fold, and she’ll be introduced in perfect Grey’s Anatomy fashion: The new pediatric surgeon will have an altercation with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) outside the hospital, only to discover they’ll have to work together on a case.
ABC premieres Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy on March 14. You’ll also be able to stream new episodes on Hulu.
